It was a day to remember for kindergarteners at John Lewis Childs School, as Mr. Q and Ms. U were united in marriage. The ceremony incorporated all the highlights of a typical wedding, while emphasizing the students’ classroom studies.
As the “Wedding March” played, two kindergartners, Mr. Q and Ms. U, began their procession down the aisle, surrounded by all of the school’s kindergarteners and their family members. Principal Susan Cvitkovich Fazio officiated at the ceremony, explaining that Mr. Q and Ms. U would be joined in marriage and spend their lives working together to make words. Those in attendance then listened closely as students recited a special poem from a book of ABCs.

Mr. Q and all of the boys promised to let Ms. U stand by Mr. Q in all the words they make. Ms. U and all the girls pledged to follow Mr. Q in all the words he planned to make, but reminded him that she could make her own words, too.
After the ceremony, students showed off their footwork during a dance party that was choreographed by the teachers and enjoyed a snack with their special guests.
According to kindergarten teacher Erin Notaro, students have been learning letters of the alphabet and sight words, as well as beginning and ending blends. Teachers reinforced the blended sound of “qu” with simple phrases, such as “Q and U stick like glue.” Students were encouraged to dress as quarterbacks and queens for the event and enjoyed a variety of classroom activities focused on “qu” words.
