Casey Hayes, an adolescent education major from New Hyde Park, was a member of the 2017-18 SUNY Oneonta women’s basketball team.

Oneonta finished with an overall record of 19-8 and 13-5 in the SUNYAC. The Red Dragons qualified for the conference tournament where they advanced to the championship game.

Casey played in 27 games starting in two this season for the Red Dragons. She scored 119 points and grabbed 127 rebounds while leading the team with 23 blocks.

Jesse Elias of Manhasset was recently initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective all-discipline collegiate honor society. Elias was initiated at Fordham University.

Elias is among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter. Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

More than 60 students, including Christine Cimpian, a psychology major from Great Neck, collaborated with faculty on a variety of research projects last summer as part of Muhlenberg College’s vibrant research community.

Undergraduate research topics can be student- or faculty-driven, and span the natural and social sciences, humanities and arts. In summer 2017, projects included studying air quality, violin acoustics, cell genetics, works from a famous Irish novelist, Islamic and Ecuadorian cultures, and more.

Emily Shlafmitz, a member of the Colgate University Class of 2018, has earned the fall 2017 Dean’s Award with Distinction.

Shlafmitz is a graduate of Paul D. Schreiber HS, from Port Washington. Shlafmitz’s current major is English.

Students who receive a term grade point average of 3.6 or higher while completing at least three courses during the fall 2017 semester earn the Dean’s Award with Distinction.

Elizabeth Arenare, a member of the Colgate University Class of 2018, has earned the fall 2017 Dean’s Award with Distinction.

Arenare is a graduate of Manhasset High School, from Manhasset. Arenare’s current major is psychology.

Lindsay Edwards, a member of the Colgate University Class of 2018, has earned the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence. Edwards is from Port Washington. Edwards’s current major is economics.

Hannah Zeitlin, a member of the Colgate University Class of 2018, has earned the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence. Zeitlin is a graduate of Great Neck South High School, from Great Neck. Zeitlin’s current major is environmental economics.

Chelsea Taylor, a member of the Colgate University Class of 2019, has earned the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence. Taylor is a graduate of Manhasset High School. Taylor’s current major is political science.

Matthew Lawrence Broncato of Roslyn Heights, a senior majoring in civil engineering at Clarkson University, received the Barry S. Fischer ’54 Endowed Scholarship during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Alice Kathryn Gottesman, Port Washington resident, was named to the 2017 fall semester dean’s list at Simmons College in Boston. Their major is public relations and marketing communications.

To qualify for dean’s list status, undergraduate students must obtain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, based on 12 or more credit hours of work in classes using the letter grade system.

Wheaton College student Daniella Cheng of Garden City Park, New York, performed in the Symphonic Band’s winter concert, directed by Dr. Timothy Yontz. Cheng played flute.

About 600 students earned their undergraduate, graduate, or law degrees at Hofstra University’s midyear commencement ceremony on Dec. 20, 2017 at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Watch videos or see photos from the event at hofstra.edu/commencement.

Hugo Renzzo Olcese of Mineola attended the 2018 USENIX Enigma Conference and Facebook’s University Cybersec Partnership Day in California last month, thanks to scholarships from Facebook.

The trip provided eleven engineering and computer science students from Hofstra University the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and security researchers about emerging threats and defenses in cybersecurity.

The students were chosen by Facebook to attend the conference because they’d previously completed the Facebook and CodePath.org Cybersecurity Course offered by Hofstra’s Computer Science Society last fall.

The following students have been named to the dean’s list at Bates College for the fall semester ending in December 2017.
