Recycling guidelines for plastic, paper, glass, and metal items

The Island Now

The Town of North Hempstead is reminding residents about proper recycling procedures. Paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and metal items need to be properly cleaned and sorted. This helps collection and recycling workers, and it ensures that items are disposed of in the correct manner. Soiled and contaminated recyclables can make an entire recycling load unusable.

“With the increase in people staying home and practicing social distancing there has also been an increase in garbage and recycling,” said North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth. “We urge our residents to make sure that all plastic, metal, and glass items are cleaned before they are placed in their recycling receptacles. This not only helps keep our collection and recycling workers safe, but clean recyclables can also help prevent the spread of coronavirus.”

The following items may be placed out for recycling in the town:
Clean #1 or #2 plastic items, such as bottles and jugs
Clean glass bottles and jars
Clean metal items, such as cans and tins
Clean cardboard (bundled together)
Clean paper items, such as newspapers, paper bags, and other paper (bundled together)
