Although all baby boomers are officially senior citizens, many are still averse to participating in activities at a senior citizens center. But they are missing out on a wide variety of interesting programs offered to older adults, such as classes like tai chi, strength training or expressing one’s inner creative self after never having the time because of child-rearing and careers.

To be more inviting to a broader range of retirees, the Port Washington Senior Citizens Center is changing its name to the Port Washington Adult Activities Center.

On Saturday, June 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held to unveil signs featuring the new name. The ceremony will take place in front of the center building near the entrance. Following the ceremony, guests will be invited inside for light refreshments and tours, if desired. Several vendors will also be available to discuss their services.

Today’s senior citizens vary greatly in health, mobility, interests and needs. The Adult Activities Center is responding to these differences with greater and more diverse programming based on feedback from current members and the greater Port Washington community. For example, in September, a new “Wellness Wednesdays” program will begin that will feature exercise, holistic living, mindfulness, nutrition and more.

Anyone interested in learning about all of the enriching programs offered at the center, stop by between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on June 8. The Center is located at 80 Manorhaven Boulevard in Port Washington. Call (516) 883-6656 for more information.
