Roslyn ed board approves 2018-19 budget, public vote May 15

The Island Now

The proposed 2018-19 budget for the Roslyn Public Schools calls for an increase in the tax levy of 1.72 percent, as presented by a unanimous Board of Education to the voters of the school community.

Voters will go to the polls on May 15 to vote on a budget of $109,959,967. Spending will increase by 2.59 percent, with growth in a number of instructional areas. Additional security enhancements and personnel are also included in the budget. The projected tax levy will increase by 1.72 percent.

This will be the tenth consecutive year that Roslyn’s budget has been below the tax levy limit imposed by the state, which is four years longer than the budget cap has been required by law. Including projections for next year, the school tax levy has risen an average of about 1 percent per year over the last decade.

In addition to the school budget, or Proposition 1, the following will also be on the ballot:

  • Election of three trustees to the Board of Education. Three candidates have filed petitions to run for three at-large seats. In the order in which they will appear on the ballot, the candidates are David Dubner, David Seinfeld and Michael Levine.
  • The 2018-19 budget for the Bryant Library, or Proposition 2.
  • Proposition 3 authorizes financing for new school buses and vans, part of a continual program of replacement of the oldest vehicles in the district’s bus fleet. The cost is included in the regular school budget. Therefore, approval of this proposition will have no additional impact on taxpayers.

Budget documents and other school budget information are posted on the school district’s website roslynschools.org in the Business and Finance section.

Voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. May 15 in the new gymnasium at Roslyn High School. Voters are asked to enter the high school campus on Harbor Hill Road.

To vote, an individual must be a U.S. citizen, 18 years old, a resident of the Roslyn School District for at least 30 days, and registered to vote in advance of election day. For additional information, please contact the District Clerk at 801-5002.

Absentee ballots are also available on the website.
