On May 17, Herricks High School senior and social studies research student Nora Ma graduated from an internship with the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City. She had been selected from a pool of candidates that provided a unique, year-long, afterschool program that offered a behind-the-scenes look into the museum.

Ambassadors examined artifacts and explored ongoing themes and issues raised by the events of Sept. 11, 2001. They also gained professional experience by helping with hands-on activities for young visitors and their caregivers. Finally, ambassadors wrote artifact talks and learned how to present them to visitors. Ma worked alongside museum archivists and educators learning the individual stories of those that were impacted.

At Ma’s graduation she spoke about how the experience made an event in history real to her even though she was born that year and has no recollection of it.
