Members of the Sewanhaka Central High School Board of Education recognized district students who were selected to perform as part of the 2017 New York State School Music Association All-State winter conference in Rochester, New York, from Nov. 30–Dec. 3.

Elmont Memorial’s Ekele Ukegbu (Soprano Voice, Vocal Jazz and Soprano II Treble Choir), Floral Park Memorial’s Matthew Kenna (Tenor I Mixed Chorus), H. Frank Carey’s Courtney Dunn (Soprano II alternate) and Sewanhaka High School’s Jessica Staiano (Soprano I Treble Chorus) were chosen based upon their outstanding scores at last year’s solo NYSSMA adjudication. They will perform with the best high school musicians in New York State.

“I’d like to congratulate these NYSSMA winners and certainly congratulate their building principals, district music teachers and chairpersons, who work very well with these students,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ralph Ferrie said. “We look forward to their performances throughout the year.”

In addition to honoring the student-musicians, the board listened to a presentation about the district’s Virtual Enterprises International program, which was presented by Floral Park Memorial business teacher Nasira Rafiq.
