Sewanhaka High School mathematics teacher Stefanie Dunphy was named the Teacher of the Month for December.

Mathematics Chairperson Patricia Aiello nominated Mrs. Dunphy for the honor.

“It has been my pleasure to work side-by-side with Stef for the last 10 years,” Aiello said. “Her upbeat personality and willingness to always pitch in makes her a positive addition to the mathematics department. Stef gives 100 percent to everything she does and goes above and beyond to help her fellow colleagues. Her genuine disposition allows her to work in harmony with colleagues and makes her extremely well liked by students.”

Mrs. Dunphy’s passion for teaching has been described as “palpable,” with her students on the edge of their seats to participate in the lesson. Her sense of humor and positive personality is endearing to her students.

“As department chair, I have dealt with zero discipline problems from her classes. The highest compliment that I could pay Mrs. Dunphy is that she is the teacher you would want your own child to have,” Aiello said.

Dunphy is the school’s senior high Mathlete’s coach and draws students of all levels of mathematical ability to the club. She has never missed a competition. She also brings the team to competitions beyond the ones scheduled by the district.

“Mrs. Dunphy is a tremendous asset to the math department, so she was an easy choice to receive this honor,” Ms. Aiello said.
