Social Action Committee of Temple Judea launches winter coat drive

One of the goals of Temple Judea, and indeed all of Judaism, is the emphasis on Tikkun Olam, literally “repairing the world.”

One of the key elements of repairing the world is helping those who are in need. At Temple Judea, this translates into helping the community in several ways.

The Social Action Committee, chaired by Rita Marcus and Alicia Munves, provides community help over the entire year. The committee is currently collecting coats, jackets, hats, gloves, and scarves for families and individuals in advance of the cold winter months ahead.

This project is in partnership with TANS, a consortium of North Shore synagogues and the Sid Jacobson JCC.

Other programs include the annual Thanksgiving food project which provides the “fixings” for 24 local families. Another project is “Adopt-A-Family” which supports a local family on an ongoing basis.

For Hanukkah, traditionally a gift-giving holiday, the Committee will be collecting appropriate gifts for JAFCO (Jewish Adoption and Family Care Options). The goal of this organization is to care for abused, neglected and at-risk children as well as those with developmental disabilities in the Jewish community. Last year the Committee provided two bicycles to the organization at its request.

In addition, the Committee has provided meals for hospital health workers and for local families dealing with food insecurity and provides supports for a local homeless shelter.
