A successful winter season for Herricks sports

Herricks athletes wrapped up a successful winter season with many state and county-level contenders.

The girls basketball, boys bowling, girls bowling, boys swimming, boys track, girls track and cheerleading teams were named Scholar Athlete Teams for maintaining grade point averages of 90 or higher, and numerous students excelled as teams and individually.

Boys swim team members Sean McClellan, Terran Cheng, David Zhang, Dominick Picirillo, Peter Brala, Marcus Chau, Colin Hwang and Sam Yang competed in the Nassau County Boys Swimming and Diving Championships, and Sean and Colin advanced to the state championships at the Long Island Aquatic Center.

The bowling teams earned several accomplishments. The girls team finished the regular season with a 565.9 average, placing seventh among large schools in Nassau County and qualifying for the Team County Tournament on Feb. 3 at AMF Garden City Lanes. The boys team was led by All-County honoree Matthew Schultz, who finished the regular season with a 221.1 average – the second highest in Nassau County. Matthew competed at the Individual County Tournament on Feb. 10 in Garden City and achieved a third-place finish, securing a spot on the Section VIII Team. He moved on to the State Tournament on March 10 at the Oncenter Convention Center in Syracuse.

Wrestlers Joe Mattei, Kailen McCauley, Alex Skeries, Daniel Mattei, Ryan Slattery, Cole LaRock and Francisco Cabrera made it to the Nassau County Championships, where Francesco finished sixth in his weight class.

Azka Chaudry, Nicole Garcia, Rhea Rasquinha, Craig Denton competed in the Nassau County Winter Track Championships and the girls basketball team reached the playoffs. Additionally, junior varsity boys basketball coach Dr. Mike Yoo was voted Junior Varsity Coach of the Year.
