The Syrian refugee crisis, and how you can help

The Island Now

Adam Haber — local entrepreneur, dedicated community member, and currently head of Economic Development and Government Efficiency for the Town of Hempstead — will address the Port Washington community on March 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Temple Beth Israel regarding his work with an organization called Najda Now Canada (NNC), an organization which helps Syrian refugee families emigrate to and resettle in Canada.

The raging civil war in Syria over the past 6 years has been called “the worst man-made disaster this world has seen since World War II . . . a torture-chamber: a place of savage horror and absolute injustice.” Despite huge charitable aid efforts, the crisis remains; millions of Syrians are homeless and lack the basic necessities for subsistence.

Mr. Haber, upon seeing television footage of the carnage in Syria, saw the similarities to the holocaust of World War II and decided he needed to take action to try to save some lives. He was put in touch with NNC, an organization that established a response to the growing humanitarian crisis in Syria by raising money to help resettle Syrian refugees in Canada, and Adam traveled to Canada twice to learn more.

Through NNC, Adam and his family have sponsored a Syrian family, which has been resettled in Canada. Adam’s presentation, “Whoever Saves a Life, Saves the World,” will inform the community about his work with NNC and about how to get involved and help.
