Baseball and Judaism have more in common than one might think. From symbols and rituals to the importance of history, many American Jews feel a strong connection to the sport.
Temple Judea celebrated this connection over this past week with two very special baseball-themed programs.
First, on Monday, Nov. 12, participants met at Hodges Gate to begin a private, behind the scenes tour of Citi Field. Highlights of the tour included the Mets’ locker room, the dugout, the bullpen, and the press briefing room.
On Wednesday, Nov. 14, local author Brett Topel regaled with stories that led to the writing and publication of his three books on the Mets. For his book, When Shea Was Home: The Story of the 1975 Mets, Yankees, Giants, and Jets, he told of meeting the senior groundskeeper who was responsible for making sure that the field was properly maintained for all of the sports. He explained how he came up with the trivia for his book, So You Think You’re a New York Mets Fan? He also shared his favorite Mets story from his book of 31 Great Mets stories, Miracle Moments in New York Mets History.
Temple Judea will conclude this Lifelong Learning series with a screening of the film, Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story. The screening will take place on Dec. 2 at 1:00 p.m. and will be followed by a discussion led by Lauren Resnikoff, Education Director at Temple Judea.
