The Art Guild presents “ABOUT FACE: The Portrait”

The Art Guild invites the public to the reception and awards ceremony for “ABOUT FACE: The Portrait, A Juried Competition and Exhibition” was held on Sunday, Sept. 8, from 3 to 5 p.m. Both the gallery and the reception are free and open to the public. The exhibit will be on view from Aug. 31 – Sept. 29. Gallery hours are Saturdays and Sundays from 1 – 5 p.m. or weekday hours by appointment.

With more than 200 entries from across the country, this is one of The Art Guild’s most popular competitions. A wide range of styles and mediums are represented, from watercolor, oil and photography, to mixed media and sculpture. The 64 artists included in the show are Douglas Barnaby, Diane Bares, Lily Braff, Sal Butta, Henry Butz, Elizabeth Caputo, The Art Guild student Anthony DeNisco, Doris Diamond, Liz Ehrlichman, Deirdre Elzer-Lento, Judith Feinman, Ellie Foster, Stuart Friedman, Richard Froman, Manvi Golcha, William Grabowski Jr, Jan Guarino, Linda Gleit, Katherine Hagen, Heather Heckel, Susan Herbst, Stephen Hetzel, Jeff Holtzman, Shelley Holtzman, Larry Houser, Sabine Jean-Bart, Rene Joseph, Ellen Keller, Emily Klima, Rosemary Konatich, Annette Kasle, Joan Laufer, Hali Layton, Asia Lee, Linda Louis, Jane McGraw, Marion McManus, John Micheals, George Miller, Monica Marquez Gatica, Denise Ortell, Ann Parry Daniele Pollitz, Eli Rabe, The Art Guild student Olivia Rapuccuiolo, Marc Reubins, Alan Richards, Alice Riordan, Kimberly Roberts, Irene Sankari, Jane Scal, Roya Shamsdiba, Paula Sherman, Steve Silberstein, Barbara Silbert, Barbara Stein, Joan Stevens, Susan Kozodoy Silkowitz, Jane Tujak, Leo Tujak, Marcia Weisman, Dave Wollin, The Art Guild student Athena Yao and Ginny Zirpolo.

The juror-of-awards for this exhibit is Robert Silverman. Silverman’s innovative techniques have been featured in American Artist Workshop Magazine and The Art of the Portrait, the official publication of the Portrait Society of America. His work has appeared at Crosby Street Gallery and Spring Studio Gallery in Soho, the Art League of Long Island, Edward Hopper House, The Art Guild of Port Washington, The National Art League, the Lockwood-Mathews Museum, as well as the National Arts Club and Salmagundi Club. He has been recognized with numerous awards.

Classes for children and adults run six-days a week. Children’s and teen fall classes for ages 5-18 begin early September including “Art Explorations” for ages 5-7, “Art Studio” for ages 8-12, “Solving Art” for ages 8-12, “Intro to Digital Art” for middle schoolers, “Empowering the Teen Artists” for middle school and high school students and “High School Studio Portfolio Development.”

Adult classes include series such as “Get Sharp: Drawing with Stephanie Navon-Jacobson” on Mondays; “New Strategies & Techniques in Portraiture with Robert Silverman” on Mondays, “Oil Painting with Joan Stevens” on Tuesdays, “Beginner & Intermediate Watercolors with Eileen Neville” on Wednesdays, “Painting with Beginners with Manny Villalobos” on Wednesday nights, “Basic Drawing with Barbara Silbert” on Thursdays and “Painting for Beginners with Joan Stevens” on Saturdays.

The Art Guild continues to offer popular workshops for a fun, immersive experience:

Sept. 13 – 15: “Alla Prima (Plein Air) Painting with Robert Simone”

Sept. 21 – 22: “Embrace the Practice – Daily Painting with Lisa Daria Kennedy”

Oct. 3 – 6: “Alla Prima Painting: Still Life & the Figure with David Shevlino.”
