Summer slowly ebbs but lingers in a legacy of memories – heat waves followed by cooling twilights, crashing surf on sand swept dunes, and the “living is easy” ambiance that envelops the seniors of the Herricks Leisure Club.

To enhance these summer reflections, we also recall the club adventures that piqued our attention this spring.

May 17 set the scene for an engrossing meeting. Vice President Frank Vendinello peppered his remarks with humorous asides and Corresponding Secretary Terry Lanese reported on a call from former member Marie Rallo, now residing in Ohio, and noted that long-time past member Marie Morelli had passed away.

Director Hilda Escobar commented on the exceptional tribute paid to Tess Fiorentino in honor of her many years of service to our club and the community. Marie Cristello announced trips to two shows “Sister Act” and “Gypsy”.

A jubilant experience took place on May 22 when our own Jeanette Kovalsky was acclaimed at the 46th Annual Senior Recognition Luncheon held at the Harbor Links Golf Course. Kovalsky ’s family and many of our members celebrated this delightful ceremony which addressed her many contributions to our organization.

At our next assembly on May 24,Kovalsky thanked us for attending her special event and we were visited by Dr. Alka Rednam who presented a most informative lecture on dementia.

A significant number of our group was present at the inspiring Memorial Day services at the Veterans of Foreign War on May 28.

Another instructive occasion occurred on May 31 when President Lillian Ciesluk introduced our guest Dolorita De Jesus who delivered an enlightening discourse on stroke prevention.

We entered a new month of exploits on June 7 when we were treated to a joyful performance of Broadway melodies by the Center Street School Chamber Choir. The students even supplied us with a booklet of lyrics for a “sing along”. A dual celebration of seven June and 12 July birthdays as well as the anniversary of the Ruffinis followed.

An exciting Yonkers trip took place on June 13 and a most enjoyable tour entranced us the next day when we were bussed to the city for a “Spirit of New York” boat excursion including lunch and a “walk around” of Chelsea Market. Thank you Rosemarie Campolongo for arranging this fun-filled trip.

The grand finale for our club year emerged on June 21 when we gathered at the elegant Westbury Manor for dining, dancing and camaraderie and looking forward to a safe and happy vacation.

A pleasurable element of that vacation period happened at the Hempstead Harbor beach where we came together each week to enjoy the entertainment and fellowship of Funday Monday. Casino outings escorted by Rita Ruffini also commanded our attention on July 11 and August 8.

And now, as summer winds down, it also signals our return to new adventures in the upcoming club year for we can all use a portion of spirit and hope in our golden years.

We invite Herricks School District residents over 60 to join us at the Community Center at 11 a.m. on September 6.
