At the most recent Town of North Hempstead Board meeting on April 17, Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the board approved altering the fees at parks across the Town.
The Town board approved reducing the resident daily parking fee at both North Hempstead Beach Park and Manorhaven Beach Park from $15 to $10 when using a credit card.
Active military will also now receive the same discounts as veterans on parks fees.
This includes pool memberships, as well as other parking and permit fees that already offer discounts to Veterans.
The Board also approved free parking for both active members of the military and veterans at the Town’s annual Memorial Day commemoration event on May 26 at North Hempstead Beach Park.
Also approved at the meeting:
Abandoned vehicles: The board held a public hearing to discuss amending the town code to allow abandoned vehicles to be auctioned off on the internet. Currently, the town code allows for the Highway Department to auction abandoned vehicles. However, the new law passed will explicitly allow these auctions to take place online.
Mackay Horse Improvements: The board voted to award a $98,000 contract to Woodstock Construction Group for the construction of a plaza around the Mackay Horse Statue at Gerry Pond Park in Roslyn.
Martin “Bunky” Reid Park in Westbury: The board voted to enter into a professional services agreement with H2M Architects and Engineers of Melville for the redesign of and improvements to Martin “Bunky” Reid Pool in Westbury.
H2M will be redesigning the engineering upgrades to the pool and filtration system, the design of a new splash pad, as well as the design of a locker room and bathroom.
Town officials also recently applied for a National Recreation and Park Association grant that, if awarded, will provide over $30,000 for new playground equipment at Martin “Bunky” Reid Park.
Long Island Nets: The board voted to amend a previous agreement with the Long Island Nets authorizing them to run 3 mini elite basketball clinics at “Yes We Can” Community Center this summer. The Board also voted to enter into an agreement with the LI Nets and Verizon to host a community event this summer at the “Yes We Can” Community Center.
Improvements at Broadway Park: The board voted for an ADA accessible ramp to be installed at the brand new playground at Broadway Park in Garden City Park. Other improvements include the complete replacement of the playground borders. These borders are railroad ties that serve to keep the engineered wood fiber in place and also serve as a retaining wall in the rear of the playground. The project will cost $12,000.
Arbor Day: The board passed a resolution declaring April 27 as Arbor Day in the Town of North Hempstead, which is one the requirements for the Town to be designated as a “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation.
The Town was recently designated a “Tree City USA” for the seventh year.
Beautification Donations: The Town Board accepted a donation of flowers from the AARP for the beautification of signage at Michael J. Tully Park and the gazebo area on I.U. Willets Road in Albertson as well as a donation of $1,100 from Donna Berardi and the Zibner Family to purchase a commemorative bench at Gerry Pond Park in Roslyn for Jay Zibner.
The next meeting will be held at 7 p.m. May 8 at Clinton G. Martin Park in New Hyde Park.
