Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen announced the town’s 2018 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program schedule.

Trained Volunteer Income Tax Assistance volunteers can provide seniors and residents with limited income with free assistance to prepare their federal and state income tax returns. The VITA program is sponsored by the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service.

“Our dedicated and professionally trained VITA volunteers are ready to assist our seniors, as well as residents of limited means, obtain the maximum possible refund this year,” said Supervisor Gillen. “Senior centers and local libraries throughout the Town of Hempstead will be open and available to assist anyone in need of help this year.”

Participants must bring last 2016’s tax return, all wage, Social Security and earning statements – W-2 and 1099, and 1095, if applicable – all interest, dividend, capital gains, IRAs, annuities and pension statements, 2017 property tax receipts, STAR exemption records, itemized expense records, social security cards and photo identification of all those filing tax returns.

Most Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites require that an appointment be made in advance. In addition, some VITA locations are equipped to file tax returns electronically.

“I encourage any senior citizen or resident with limited income who is interested in having his or her tax return prepared free of charge to select one of our 16 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance locations and take advantage of this excellent service,” Gillen said.

Various locations will be able to assist from February 5th, 2018 to April 17th, 2018.

Residents are advised to visit the town’s website ToH.LI or http://bit.do/tohliVITA for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program schedule or call the Department of Senior Enrichment at (516) 485-8100 to find a convenient location and set up an appointment.
