Northwell Health’s Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation in Manhasset and Orzac Center for Rehabilitation in Valley Stream have each earned the highest five-star ranking in US News & World Report’s annual Best Nursing Homes report, which was recently released online. US News’s Best Nursing Homes recognizes top-rated facilities in all 50 states and offers important guidance to families and health care providers caring for people in need of a nursing home.

US News’s evaluation of nursing homes is based on data from Nursing Home Compare, a consumer website run by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The government agency sets and enforces standards for nursing homes (defined as facilities or portions of facilities enrolled in Medicare or Medicaid that provide 24-hour nursing care and other medical services). Nursing homes earn an overall rating of one to five stars, as well as up to five stars in each of the three following categories: health inspections, nurse staffing and quality of care. The Best Nursing Homes 2018 report is available at: https://health.usnews.com/best-nursing-homes

Of more than 15,000 homes rated and profiled on the US News website, Northwell’s Stern Family and Orzac Centers for Rehabilitation were among the top five percent – or among the top 33 of 619 licensed nursing homes in New York State – to receive the highest overall rating. Several million Americans will spend part of this year in a nursing home, according to US News.

“Nursing homes in New York and across the country vary in quality of care and the healthcare services they provide to residents,” said Gerard Kaiser, executive director of skilled nursing facilities at Northwell Health. “It is a prestigious honor to earn five-star rankings by US News for our two centers, thanks to the hard work of our clinical teams and our entire staff dedicated to providing high quality care to our patients and residents. The report also gives concrete quality measures consumers can access on the internet to help them select the best nursing home for family members or loved ones.”

The Stern center, with 249 beds, is located on the campus of North Shore University Hospital. The Orzac center, with 120 beds, is located on the campus of Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital. Both specialize in short-term rehabilitation, skilled nursing and extended care services.
