Based on their work this past summer as scholars in the Garcia Summer Science Research Program at Stony Brook University, Herricks High School juniors Sahith Vadada and Rushikesh Patel earned the distinction of attending and presenting at the Materials Research Society Fall Meeting, held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston. They were awarded best poster presentation at the conference in a field of hundreds of graduate students.

The Materials Research Society (MRS), founded in 1973, is a growing, member-driven organization of almost 16,000 men and women from over 90 countries around the world who come from industry, academia and national labs. Their work touches on many fields, including chemistry, biology, physics and engineering and is an organization of materials researchers worldwide that promotes communication for the advancement of interdisciplinary materials research and technology to improve the quality of life.

At the Garcia Center for Polymers at Engineered Interfaces program at Stony Brook, Sahith and Rushi created polymer fiber scaffolds that serve to augment dental pulp stem cell differentiation for applications in the field of tissue engineering and cell culturing. Sahith and Rushi, along with their teammate Vedant Singh from The Wheatley School, were recently named Regional Finalists in the 2017 Siemens Competition in Science, Math, and Technology.
