Independent Nomination Petitions Being Accepted
In accordance with the bylaws of the Great Neck Library, the deadline for filing of petitions for independent nominations for expiring seats on the Board of Trustees and Nominating Committee is Aug. 15, 2018.
Petition forms are available in the Director’s Office during regular business hours. Biographical information for all candidates will appear in the October-December issue of the Library Newsletter and online at www.greatnecklibrary.org.
The Nominating Committee has endorsed candidates, as follows, to fill four seats on the Library Board of Trustees and three seats on the Nominating Committee that will be expiring in January 2019.
Board of Trustees:
- Four-year term, January 2019-2023 for the seat currently held by Robert Schaufeld – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: Liman Mimi Hu.
- Four-year term, January 2019-2023 for the seat currently held by Joel Marcus – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: David Zielenziger.
- Remaining two-year term, January 2019-2021 for Doug Hwee’s seat – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: Josie Pizer.
- Remaining one-year term, January 2019-2020 for Francine Ferrante Krupski’s seat – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: Scott Sontag.

- Three-year term, January 2019-2022 for the seat currently held by Howard Esterces – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: Francine Ferrante Krupski.

Lauren Skelly Bailey presented with New York State Citation
Assemblyman Anthony D’Urso presented ceramic artist Lauren Skelly Bailey with a New York State Citation for her project, Coral Awareness. Thanks to the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Huntington Arts Council, this summer Bailey was featured at the Great Neck Library as part of her Creative Communities Grant project.

Summer Community Service for Teens
Volunteer this summer and make a difference for local community organizations. Earn community service by participating in craft and writing projects for a variety of interests and abilities. Your service will impact youth, families, veterans, pets, and more. Volunteer dates are Wednesdays, Aug. 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29. Come as often or as little as you would like. No registration needed. Naturalization Workshops at Parkville
The first of two Naturalization Workshops will be given on Wednesday, Aug. 1 at 1 p.m. at the Parkville Branch, 10 Campbell Street off Lakeville Road, New Hyde Park 11040. Learn about the Naturalization process which will include filling out the proper forms, requirements and contact information. This workshop is offered in collaboration with Literacy Nassau and the New York State Office of New Americans.
The second workshop is Understanding Immigration Reform, and will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 7:00 p.m. also at Parkville. Presenter Treasa Kalliath works to find legal solutions for those immigrants who are struggling to find a legal footing in the U.S., and will share her knowledge and perspectives on the current state of immigration.
Treasa is a solo practitioner in U.S. Immigration and Nationality Law, and has a practice in Hicksville, NY. She is affiliated with three immigration law firms in New York for whom she handles various immigration related services.

John P. Cardone Photography: Wildlife and Waterscapes
The Wildlife and Waterscapes photography of John P. Cardone will be on display in the Main Library Gallery from Aug. 1 to 28, at 159 Bayview Avenue. “In my waterscape and wildlife images, I try to capture the beauty and spiritual magnificence of nature,” Cardone said. “My photographs represent a moment in time through unique natural settings and the amazing personalities of wildlife. I am particularly interested in how nature can calm people’s minds while they take a “time out” from their hectic, busy lives.”
Wednesday Matinee Film at Main
The next Wednesday Matinee, a musical that tells the story of a visionary who rose from nothing to create a worldwide sensation, will be shown on Wednesday, Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. at the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Have your blood pressure checked by a clinical nurse from St. Francis Hospital, free of charge on Thursday, Aug. 2 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (2nd level), above Best Market. Library patrons connected to the Internet are asked to check the website: www.cancellations.com for Library weather related closings/program cancellations.
In order to access this service, Library District residents can log on to cancellations.com, type in their zip code or Great Neck Library and obtain information on program cancellations or Library closings. In addition, at no charge, residents can request automatic e-mails from cancellations.com when the Library has posted any information. This is a way for Library District residents who are connected online to be advised of weather related changes in Library hours or programs.
