Tai Chi facilitated by Joseph Panico at Main

Tai Chi classes will be held on Saturdays, May 5, 12, 19 and June 2, 9, and 16 from
10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.
Registration fee is $40 for the entire series of eight classes. In-person registration only. Cash, check or money order should be made payable to Great Neck Library.

Tai Chi is an internal form of martial art that is practiced for health and self- defense. Incorporating breathing with slow and fluid movements, the exercise connects the internal focus of the mind with the external control of the body. Please wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Joseph Panico has been practicing martial arts for more than 15 years. He began his Tai Chi training in 1997 at Red Dragon Kung Fu Center.

Performance Poets Association Readings at Station

Join George Pafitis when he hosts Performance Poets Association Readings on Saturday, May 5 from 1 to 3 p.m., and the first Saturday of each month at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road (2nd level), Gardens at Great Neck Plaza, above Best Market.

This is an open mic forum in collaboration with the Performance Poets Association. Participate in reading your own work and/or listen and support others. A featured poet will read for 20 minutes at each session, followed by an open-mic. Performance Poets Association is a non-profit organization that provides a forum for local artists and brings original poetry and related arts to the public. The next meeting will be held on June 2.

The Wolf-Cats Band at Main

Enjoy The Wolf-Cats, an acoustically oriented string band, when they perform on Sunday,
May 6 at 2:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.
The Wolf-Cats focus on eclectic and traditional styles of music including swing, gypsy, bluegrass, and blues. The repertoire also features original music written by band leader Bob Bernstein (Wolf-Man Bob), who started the project together with his son Aaron in 2011. The band currently is comprised of Bob on guitar, mandolin and occasionally banjo; Bob’s son Aaron on fiddle; Richard Charles on guitar; Ani Azoto on bass; and Mike Leuci on percussion.

Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson

Professor Thomas Germano will present a visual lecture on Leonardo da Vinci, contextualizing the 2017 New York Times bestselling book, Leonardo da Vinci by Walter Isaacson, on Monday, May 7 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Prof. Germano will highlight the ‘Salvator Mundi’ painting which recently sold for $450.3 million and Walter Isaacson supported its authenticity for reasons related to the drawing changes in the hand. Thomas Germano is an artist and art professor at Farmingdale State College, SUNY. He has exhibited his art throughout the United States and abroad and his work is in numerous public and private collections.

Great Decisions facilitated by Librarian Christy Orquera at Main

Join the next Great Decisions discussion facilitated by Librarian Christy Orquera when the topic will be Turkey: Partner in Crisis on Tuesday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m. in the Large Multipurpose Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue. The program involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book, watching the DVD and meeting in a discussion group. Registration required. Wednesday Matinee Film at Main

The next Wednesday Matinee at Main, based on the New York Times bestseller about a 10-year old boy with a facial deformity who attends school for the first time, will be shown on Wednesday, May 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Author Talk/Book Signing with Ira A. Poliakoff at Main
Synagogues of Long Island

Join author Ira Poliakoff for a talk and book signing of his book, Synagogues of Long Island, on Wednesday, May 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Avenue.

Author Ira Poliakoff catalogues the history of synagogues and congregations that have shaped Long Island past and present. After World War II, hundreds of thousands of Jewish soldiers returned from war looking for a life in the suburbs and synagogues to join. In 1946, Rabbi Elias Solomon called a meeting of Conservative rabbis from the area in Manhattan to map out a plan for a synagogue at every South Shore Long Island Railroad stop from Valley Stream to Patchogue. Central Synagogue of Nassau County and Temple Beth El in Great Neck both grew to more than one thousand families as Reform Judaism took hold.

Books will be available for purchase at the event.

Great Neck Library seeking prospective candidates for Board of Trustees and Nominating Committee

Take the opportunity to participate in the process that largely determines the services and programs that the Great Neck Library offers to the community. Consider running for a position on the Board of Trustees or Nominating Committee, and be a part of the future of the Library.

The next Great Neck Library Election will be held on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018. There will be seven seats expiring in January 2019. Four of these seats are on the Board of Trustees (Robert Schaufeld, Joel Marcus, as well as the remaining term for the seat currently held by Josie Pizer (2021) and the remaining term for the recently vacated seat held by Francine Ferrante Krupski (2020). Three seats are on the Nominating Committee (Donald Panetta and Howard Esterces, as well as the remaining term for the seat currently vacated by Sam Gottlieb (2021).

Any nominee for a position on the Board of Trustees or the Nominating Committee must be a member of the Great Neck Library Association or a registered voter with the Nassau County Board of Elections by the Record Date of Oct. 1, 2018.
