Great Neck Library Annual Election
Monday, October 29, 2018
The annual election for Library Board of Trustees and Nominating Committee members will be held on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Main Library and Parkville Branch.
In order to be eligible to vote for Library trustees and Nominating Committee members,
you must be 18 years of age or older, a resident of the Great Neck School District and either a valid Great Neck Library cardholder by the Record Date of Monday, October 1, 2018 by 5 p.m., or a registered voter with the Nassau County Board of Elections. The Nominating Committee has endorsed the candidates, as follows, to fill four seats on the Library Board of Trustees and three seats on the Nominating Committee that will be expiring in January 2019.
Four-year term, January 2019-2023 for the seat currently held by Robert Schaufeld – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: Liman Mimi Hu.
Four-year term, January 2019-2023 for the seat currently held by Joel Marcus – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: David Zielenziger.
Remaining two-year term, January 2019-2021 for Doug Hwee’s seat – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: Josie Pizer.
Remaining one-year term, January 2019-2020 for Francine Ferrante Krupski’s seat – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: Scott J. Sontag.
Nominating Committee: Three-year term, January 2019-2022 for the seat currently held by Howard Esterces – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: Francine Ferrante Krupski.
Three-year term, January 2019-2022 for the seat currently held by Donald Panetta – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: William Gens.
Remaining two-year term, January 2019-2021 for Samuel Gottlieb’s seat – Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate: Siu Long (Alex) Au.
Independent Candidates: Robert M. Schaufeld, current Board President, has filed a petition as an Independent Candidate for the remainder of Francine Ferrante Krupski’s term (January 2019-2020) on the Board of Trustees. The Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate for this same seat is Scott J. Sontag.
Chelsea Sassouni, current Trustee, has filed a petition as an Independent Candidate for the expiring seat currently held by Joel Marcus (Four Year Term January 2019-2023) on the Board of Trustees. The Nominating Committee Endorsed Candidate for this same seat is David Zielenziger.

Residents living North of Northern Boulevard, vote at the Main Library, Community Room: 159 Bayview Ave., Great Neck, NY 11023. Residents living South of Northern Boulevard, vote at the Parkville Branch: 10 Campbell St., New Hyde Park, NY 11040.
Residents may also elect to vote by proxy. A proxy request form can be found in the October/November/December Library Newsletter and also on the Library website at www.greatnecklibrary.org.
A form can also be obtained at any of the four Great Neck Library locations. Please note that Friday, Oct. 19 is the last day to mail proxy ballots. Completed ballots must be received at the Main Post Office on Welwyn Road or deposited in a locked box at any Great Neck Library location by Friday, Oct. 26 before 5 p.m.
Performance Poets Association Readings at Station
Join George Pafitis when he hosts Performance Poets Association Readings on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Station Branch, 26 Great Neck Road, Gardens at Great Neck Plaza, above Best Market.
This is a monthly Open Mic forum in collaboration with the Performance Poets Association. Participate in reading your own work and/or listen and support others. A featured poet will read for 20 minutes at each session, followed by an open-mic. Performance Poets Association is a non-profit organization that provides a forum for local artists and brings original poetry and related arts to the public.

Return to Camelot: Music From the Kennedy White House Concerts

The Alexander Wu Trio will perform Return to Camelot on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1:30 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave.
Celebrating the recent John F. Kennedy centennial in 2017-2018, pianist and arranger Alexander Wu, Bela Horvath on violin, and Sonna Kim on viola/cello invite the public to explore and enjoy Return to Camelot as the chamber group recreates the iconic music and the greatest artists heard at the White House Concerts during President Kennedy’s administration from 1961-1963. The music of Aaron Copland, Tony Bennett, Leonard Bernstein, Dave Brubeck, Pablo Casals, George Gershwin, Mahalia Jackson, Felix Mendelssohn and more will be performed.
The Alexander Wu Trio has performed at venues including Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Mannes College of Music-The New School, Interchurch Center, and Riverside Church.
The Great Neck Library Music Advisory Committee, now in its 48th year, is co-chaired by founding member Gabe Chieco and Michele Ganz, and includes members Mary Dehn and Estelle Pace. This all volunteer committee of Great Neck residents represents a wide range of musical experience and performance.
Opera Screening of Andrea Chénier at Main

Gabe Chieco will host and provide commentary for a screening with English subtitles of this stunning performance of Andrea Chénier with soprano Anna Netrebko, taped live at Milan’s La Scala Opera House on Tuesday, Oct. 9 at 2 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave.
Andrea Chénier is a verismo opera in four acts by composer Umberto Giordano, set to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica, and first performed on March 28, 1896 at La Scala, Milan. With its intense themes of love and revolution and Giordano’s wondrous score Andrea Chénier has long been one of opera’s most beloved pieces.
Gabe Chieco is a founding and current member of the Library’s Music Advisory Committee. He also has hosted many screenings and programs on opera and ballet throughout the years.

The Great Decisions program involves reading the Great Decisions Briefing Book, watching the DVD and meeting in a discussion group to discuss the most critical global issues facing America today. For more than a decade Rhoda Plotkin has led “Current Issues in the News” discussions at Independent Living programs regarding domestic and international issues facing America. She was executive director of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy, and co-produced a monthly radio series.

Moolah Doula with Joanne Leffeld at Main
Join Joanne Leffeld when she presents Moolah Doula on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave.
Joanne Leffeld likens her role to helping people give birth to a healthier relationship with their money. The idea behind her “moolah doula” is that a person who can accept and understand the current state of their finances can more easily move forward in a better direction. Leffeld began her career as a certified financial planner in the 1980s.
On Health and Healing with Librarian Mimi Rabizadeh at Main
Join Librarian Mimi Rabizadeh for “What’s your gut have to do with it?” on Thursday, Oct. 11 at noon in the Large Multipurpose Room of the Main Library, 159 Bayview Ave.
She will discuss the latest research in medicine on keeping the “Gut” healthy and the role your gut plays in keeping the brain, immune system, and the entire body healthy.

In addition, at no charge, residents can request automatic e-mails from cancellations.com when the Library has posted any information. Library District residents who are connected online can be advised of weather related changes in Library hours or programs.
