Virtual Tour of Spanish Speaking Countries

Have you ever wanted to travel to a faraway land without leaving the Library? Virtual Reality is an interactive computer-generated experience taking place within a simulated environment. Join us as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by using our Playstation 4 VR bundle to travel to Spanish-speaking countries. Space for this event is extremely limited and online registration is required. Our Playstation Virtual Reality Kit was made possible through generous support from the Friends of the Library.  2 p.m.

Behind Bars: Meeting the Medial and Educational Needs of Incarcerated People

PWPL is proud to welcome Homer Venters, former Chief Medical Officer of Rikers Island and author of Life and Death in Rikers Island and Vivian Nixon, Executive Director of College & Community Fellowship to discuss medical conditions for incarcerated people and opportunities for creating a better future by finding pathways to education. Rebecca Sanin, President/CEO of Health & Welfare Council of Long Island, will moderate the discussion. Dolphin Book Shop will sell copies of Dr. Venters’ book at the event. 7:30 p.m.

World Travels with Ron Brown: Buenos Aires: The Paris of Latin America HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

Virtual Visits: Hispanic American Society

Ines Powell returns to walk us through the newly re-opened Hispanic Society of America. Founded in 1904 by Archer M. Huntington, the institution remains at its original location in a 1908 Beaux Arts building on Audubon Terrace (at 155th Street and Broadway) in New York City. The museum contains more than 18,000 works in every medium, including important paintings by Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Goya, El Greco and Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. 2:30 p.m.

Self-Promotion Workshop for Writers: Best Practices

Author Natalie S Harnett will discuss different forms of self-promotion that can be realistically accomplished. Natalie S. Harnett has an MFA from Columbia in Fiction. Sandwiched In: THE URGENCY OF TONI MORRISON with Dr. Bill Thierfelder

Join Dr. Bill Thierfelder as we explore the life and legacy of Toni Morrison, whose best-selling work examined racial and gender identity in America — particularly the often-crushing experience of black women — through incandescent prose resembling that of no other writer in English. She was the first African-American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature and the author of 11 novels as well as 5 children’s books (written with her son Slade) and several essay collections. 12:15 p.m.

PWPL is proud to partner with Landmark on Main Street for a screening of UNDOCUMENTED and an artist reception with Jose Flores.

*The film will be shown at Landmark* The 2016 film UNDOCUMENTED is the true story of Dr. Harold Fernandez, a top New York cardiac surgeon who came to the United States as a young undocumented immigrant. The 72-minute film is followed by a talk back with Dr. Fernandez and the film’s producers, Patricia Shih and Greg Banks. 1 p.m.

After the film, please join us back at PWPL for the opening reception and talk with artist Jose Flores, Jose Flores is a self-taught artist based out of Port Washington, New York, whose heart and spirit remain rooted in his place of birth, Guatemala, the heartland of the Maya. 3 p.m.

Italian Films with Val Franco: White as Milk, Red as Blood (Bianca come il Latte, Rossa come il Sangue) (2013 – 102 min.) In the city of Turin, a young man named Leo falls in love with a cancer-stricken woman named Beatrice. Leo will do everything possible to make her fall in love with him and save her life. Author Visit: Jackson Bird: SORTED       

An unflinching and endearing memoir from LGBTQ+ advocate and YouTube creator Jackson Bird about how, through a childhood of gender mishaps and an awkward adolescence, he finally sorted things out and came out as a transgender man in his mid-twenties. Jackson’s TED Talk “How to talk (and listen) to transgender people” has been viewed over a million times. We welcome Giovanni (Gio) Giampietro, TGNCNB Outreach Coordinator and Kerrie O’Neill, Vice President of Community Engagement & Partnerships of LGBT Network to co-moderate a discussion with Jackson.  On-site book sales will be conducted by Dolphin Book Shop. 7:30 p.m.

Sandwiched In: Rudolph Valentino         

The name Valentino sent shivers down the spines of American women of the 1920’s. Rebellious young women flocked to movie houses and were seduced by the magnetism of the screen’s first “Latin Lover.” Valentino lived the rags to riches dream of the immigrant. At a time when Italian Americans were subject to prejudice, Valentino changed the negative stereotyping of Italians in the movies forever redefining our notions of love and romance. While women adored him, many men despised him as a stealer of hearts. Containing over 100 slides interspersed with sound/video clips and excerpts from his diaries, Marilyn Carminio’s lecture will show you why Valentino can still quicken the pulse of the modern viewer. 12:15 p.m.

Just in time for Halloween, Dan Lupo returns to introduce us to hidden voice, dissonant chords, tritones and infrasound – i.e.: the music in horror movies. Composers such as Harry Manfredini (Friday, The 13th) and Charles Bernstein (A Nightmare on Elm Street) use certain tricks in their scores which can literally shake you to the core. Halloween Horrors: Pet Sematary (2019-100 min.)

Louis Creed (Jason Clarke) and his wife Rachel (Amy Seimetz) relocate with their two young children from Boston to rural Maine. The couple soon discovers a mysterious burial ground hidden deep in the woods near their new home. When tragedy strikes, Louis turns to his neighbor Jed Crandall (John Lithgow), setting off a perilous series of events that unleashes an unspeakable evil with horrific consequences. Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer co-directed this remake of the 1989 Stephen King adaptation.
