We Connect The Dots returns to New York Institute of Technology at Old Westbury for the fifth consecutive summer, teaching teenagers about science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics.
Registration is open for CreatingSTEAM, a summer program for those ages 13 through 18 who want hands-on experience in the world of technology and engineering.
This summer, the 64 accepted students will learn how to build their own 3D printer and use it to create designs and products.
“Parents, educators and government leaders must do more to encourage children to study and pursue careers in STEAM and STEM,” Laurie Carey, founder of We Connect the Dots, said. “Today, there are numerous job opportunities available for Americans who have degrees in STEM or STEAM. However, programs in schools are not enough; more needs to be done. Through this program we are working on filling the gap and inspiring the next generation.”
The nonprofit organization’s mission is to give students the tools and education they need for secure and rewarding careers in the future. CreatingSTEAM encourages students to learn through experience and gives participants an opportunity to visit Microsoft’s corporate offices in New York City.
During the intensive program from July 16 through 27, teams of students will create designs and present them at the end of the session to judges from the technology industry for input, and the winning team will be invited to present its idea to Microsoft in the fall.
Past participants have said the program is both educational and social, allowing students to interact with others who share their interest in STEAM.
