The Mineola Board of Trustees unanimously approved a new CrossFit gym for the village Thursday that will be operated by the owner of CrossFit Garden City.

Owner Dennis Marshall plans to move his gym from Garden City to Mineola by June.

Mayor Scott P. Strauss and the other members of the board said they were particularly pleased with the location that was chosen, 180 Second Ave., since it is a nonresidential area.

Trustee Dennis J. Walsh said he was also happy with the location and stressed how pleased he was that Marshall’s business is already successful, saying that “people open up businesses and a short time later their business goes under.”

According to Marshall’s website, CrossFit is “essentially cardio, gymnastics and strength training rolled into one eclectic, efficient package.” People perform exercises that use one’s own body weight, such as pullups, pushups, handstands and box jumps, as well as lift weights, climb ropes and throw medicine balls.

The gym focuses on group training, with group classes and training services through those classes, and workouts are done under the supervision of coaches. Classes are hourly and generally range from five to 15 people per class.

The gym is open from 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to noon on weekends.

The gym also has a special annual competition for members, an in-house event where all members get the chance to work out together.

The gym offers activities and classes for all ages, starting with a children’s class for 7-to-12-year-olds and ranging to a vitality program for those 55 years of age and older, its fastest growing program. Currently, the gym’s oldest member is 75 and there are about 300 members total, Marshall said.

The average cost per member is $200 per month.
