During October, if you pick up some fries at The Shack, the building at New Hyde Park Memorial High School where the Dads’ Club sells food and beverages after school and during most sporting events, $1 from each purchase will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
“Raising money to fight breast cancer is very personal to me,” said Gary C. Arman, president of the Dads’ Club. “I lost my beautiful sister Gloria Jean Hicks to breast cancer a few years back. I have a tattoo for her.”
The Dads’ Club will also sell “Taters for Tatas” T-shirts at The Shack for $20. All proceeds from shirt sales will also go to the Komen foundation.
The NHP Gladiators celebrate homecoming on Oct. 21. The parade starts at noon on the corner of Lakeville Road and Jericho Turnpike. It will head north on New Hyde Park Road, then to the school. The junior varsity football team plays at 9:15 a.m. The varsity team will play against the Manhasset Indians at 2 p.m. The new homecoming king and queen, and the class float results, will be presented during the halftime festivities.
The NHP Gladiators take the gridiron versus Great Neck District on Oct. 28. The Dads’ Club will honor veterans and wounded warrior’s during halftime by having them judge its second annual Chili Cook Off for free. Anyone else wanting to judge chili can do so for a $5 donation.
The entry fee for the contest is $20 and it is open to the first 15 paid entrants. The victor receives half the entrant fees and his or her name engraved on the Shack Plaque.
“We have a great group of dads and moms that volunteer their time every day to support the students and student activities,” Arman said.
