Darryl Strawberry hopes to fight opioid addiction… one person at a time

The Island Now

Major League Baseball All-Star Darryl Strawberry has triumphed — not only on the baseball diamond, but in life.

In the book, “Don’t Give Up on Me: Shedding Light on Addiction with Darryl Strawberry,” the four-time World Series champion shares his story of childhood abuse, drug and alcohol addiction, and eventual recovery.

Fans of the former ballplayer, as well as all those who have been touched by addiction and want to be a part of the solution, can meet Strawberry at a booksigning that will take place at Zucker Hillside Hospital’s Sloman Auditorium on Monday, Jan. 22 from 12 to 12:45 p.m.

In addition to Strawberry’s experiences, “Don’t Give Up” presents easy-to-understand explanations of addiction from trained professionals. Author Shawn Powell presents the subject through the eyes of a psychoanalyst, neuropsychiatrist, licensed clinical social worker and addiction specialist, intending to offer a path to hope and healing.

Attendees can bring their copies of the book for Strawberry to sign or purchase the book at the event.

Zucker Hillside Hospital is located at 75-59 263rd St. in Glen Oaks.
