Dix Hills man scammed 30 homeowners, including ones from New Hyde Park, out of $728K: DA’s office

A man who allegedly scammed more than 30 homeowners, including some from New Hyde Park and Hempstead out of more than $728,000 turned himself in to Nassau County investigators Thursday.

Mark Savransky of Dix Hills was arraigned on 30 felony counts of grand larceny in the second, third and fourth degrees and one count of scheme to defraud, another felony.

The top charge carries a maximum sentence of seven-and-a-half years in prison. If convicted on all counts, Savransky could face up to 20 years in prison.

Using the name Mark Savran, Savransky ran a business that purported to help homeowners with subprime mortgages modify their loans, according to a release from the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office.

After getting his clients a modified mortgage, Savransky allegedly told them to send cash or blank checks so he could make payments on their behalf.

Instead, the DA’s office said, he pocketed the money and used it for shopping, travel, child support, car payments and credit card payments.

Many of his clients’ lenders foreclosed on their homes as a result of the scam, according to the DA office’s release.

“The victims made honest attempts to renegotiate their mortgages, yet the defendant lied to them and stole more than $728,000 to line his pockets,” Acting District Attorney Madeline Singas said in the statement.

Savransky was arrested on another felony charge in Suffolk County last year for allegedly executing a similar scheme on a Hempstead couple.

District Court Judge James Darcy ordered Savransky to surrender his passport and set his bail at $250,000 bond or $125,000 cash. His next court date is Aug. 31.

Savransky’s attorney, Lowell Davis of Carle Place, could not immediately be reached for comment.

CORRECTION: A headline accompanying this story inaccurately described the amount of money allegedly bilked by Mark Savransky. It is $728,000, not $278,000. We regret the error.
