On Monday, Aug. 21, the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City will celebrate the sun’s ultimate disappearing act, the Great North American Eclipse.
For the first time in 100 years, a solar eclipse will be visible across the whole continent of North America.
In New York, the visibility will be at 70 percent, creating a sense of sunset in the middle of the day.
Amandeep Kaur, an Adelphi University physics major currently interning at the museum, said, “It’s so exciting to see the sun and moon, objects we see every day or night, in a new form in the sky together. Being able to see one of the most dramatic and astonishing events of the natural world is an opportunity like no other!”
To help encourage young scientists and visitors to get involved in the celebration of our sun, the museum will host activities that are free with museum admission from 12 to 4 p.m.
These activities will include a Hands-on Science Zone, which will have experiments to better understand this historic event.
In addition, there will be educators on hand to demonstrate different ways to safely view the eclipse, as well as fun giveaways and a time capsule in which visitors can seal memories to be opened in seven years during the next Long Island eclipse.
The solar eclipse celebration is just one of many educational events produced by the Cradle of Aviation Museum, home to more than 75 planes and spacecraft.
The museum is located on Charles Lindbergh Boulevard in Garden City.
