The Hofstra University Museum is hosting an opening reception for Converging Voices: Gender and Identity on Thursday, Sept. 14, 4 to 6 p.m.

The guest host and speaker is Karyn Valerius, Hofstra University Director of Women’s Studies and Disability Studies and Associate Professor of English.

The reception is free and open to the public.

The exhibition, on display through Dec. 15 at the Emily Lowe Gallery, presents a diverse group of artists whose work confronts multiple issues of identity, including gender, ethnicity, class and sexuality.

Curated by Karen Albert, Hofstra University Museum Deputy Director and Chief Curator, Converging Voices reflects an international scope and features artists such as Ghada Amer, Mariam Ghani, Martine Gutierrez, Guerrilla Girls, Yee I-Lann, Zanele Muholi, Pinaree Sanpitak, Carrie Mae Weems, and Philemona Williamson.

Nancy Richner, director of the Hofstra University Museum said, “Converging Voices showcases the work of a diverse group of artists who encourage us to consider complex ideas. For instance, how we straddle the contemporary while embracing the traditional, how are we seen by others verses how we define ourselves, what is our voice and how can we be heard. These are artists who present stories that we may not fully understand, and yet they captivate us the more we look.”

Additional specialized programming planned in conjunction with the exhibition includes:

Tuesday, Oct. 10, 4:30 to 6 p.m.: A Seat at the Table — Converging Voices: Gender and Identity
