Adelphi Jazz Ensemble presents Basie, Bernstein and more

The Island Now

On Dec. 7, the Adelphi Jazz Ensemble will perform covers of traditional to cutting-edge jazz at the Adelphi Performing Arts Center. The theme for this year is A Bit of Basie, A Bit of Bernstein, A Bissell Bop, and Um Beso do Brasi.

Students will perform music from legendary big-band leader William ‘Count’ Basie and master composer Leonard Bernstein, along with some classic swing, bebop, and Brazilian tunes.

For almost two years, the Adelphi Jazz Ensemble has put on performances under the direction of Priscilla Owens. Student vocalists and instrumentalists will be joined by Adelphi graduate Christian Roderer on bass, returning guest artists Vince Kazi McCoy and Glafkos Kontemeniotis, and Adelphi’s own Oswaldo Ozzie Machado on piano.

The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. on the Westermann Stage in Adelphi’s PAC Concert Hall.

Tickets are $20, with discounts available to seniors, students and alumni. Information is available at the Lucia and Steven N. Fischer Box Office at 516-877-4000 or boxoffice@adelphi.edu.

Regular office hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 6 p.m., and the box office is also open two hours before most scheduled performances. Ticket sales and additional information are available online.
