Afro-Cuban music ensemble to play in Port

The Island Now

The celebrated Cuban band, the Afro-Cuban All Stars led by Juan de Marcos Gonzalez, will be performing at Landmark on Main Street’s Jeanne Rimsky Theater on Thursday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m.

The Afro-Cuban All Stars is a unique orchestra devoted to promoting the complete story of Cuban music.  With each show, the orchestra exposes Cuba’s rich, musical history, interpreting all of its musical genres.

Buena Vista Social Club founder and bandleader de Marcos is the man responsible for their best-selling recordings. His 14-piece big band is one of the best-known and most successful Cuban orchestras performing today. The initial Buena Vista Social Club recording put together by de Marcos and Ry Cooder was a Grammy-winning international bestseller made into an Oscar-nominated film by German director Wim Wenders. de Marcos stretches his creative wings, fusing contemporary, traditional and, in essence, the future styles of Cuban music.

The ensemble captures the spirit of Afro-Cuban music with the potent mix of driving percussion and a powerhouse horn section, with piano, bass, tres, guitar and incomparable vocals.  Every performance is dynamic, with a set designed for the audience of each show.

The current lineup of band members consists of the finest Cuban expatriate musicians in the world today, all alumni of Cuba’s greatest bands. The Afro-Cuban All Stars performance pays tribute to Cuba’s popular music marrying the past with the present in the grandeur and grace of the world’s greatest orchestras.
