Children’s museum to host New Year’s dino-mite party

The Island Now

Families are invited to help make 2017 extinct at Long Island Children’s Museum’s annual “Noon” Year’s eve celebration, “Countdown to 12!”  The theme for this year’s annual, family-friendly event is dinosaur-themed to prepare visitors for the arrival of the exhibit, “Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice,” to be released in January.

“Countdown to 12!” allows visitors to take part in all the traditional elements of the holiday, including confetti and counting down to the New Year, on a schedule designed for children… and exhausted parents. Activities start at noon on Sunday, Dec. 31 and feature themed crafts, face painting, a DJ-led dance party and two ball drops to kick off and conclude the year ending party.

“This year’s theme will let us roar into 2018,” says LICM Director of Education & Visitor Experience Aimee Terzulli. “We’re gearing up for the arrival of an exhibit that we know will be very popular with families and school groups and we couldn’t wait to bring out some ‘dino-mite’ activities.”

Mid-day is substituted for midnight, but all the other New Year’s Eve party elements will be on view at “Countdown to 12!” —  music, dancing and fun activities.  During the afternoon, children will design T-Rex top hats, Raptor noisemakers and fossil necklaces, chomp into some Dino Dirt cookies and stomp into the face painting station.

DJ Mike will be on hand to help visitors groove to some tricera-top beats.  All “Countdown” activities are included with museum admission on Sunday, December 31.  To purchase general admission tickets online, go to www.licm.org.

LICM created “Countdown to 12!” in 2005 to provide families with the opportunity to celebrate this special occasion together.  Family-focused New Year’s celebrations were lacking in the area, but families looking to celebrate certainly were not. More than 20,000 visitors have rung in the New Year at the Long Island Children’s Museum since “Countdown to 12!” was launched.

All activities will be held at the Long Island Children’s Museum, 11 Davis Ave. in Garden City. Museum hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Museum admission is $13 for adults and children over 1 year old, $12 for seniors, and free for museum members and children under 1 year old.

Museum visitors under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult at all time.
