Dolphin Bookshop offers writing workshop for middle schoolers

The Island Now
If you know a 12 to 14 year old who loves writing, have them join Writers on the Sound Junior Writers Workshop at Dolphin Bookshop this fall.

Writers on the Sound Junior is a class for youth who are passionate about creative writing and need guidance in crafting stories, poems and other genres that may not get as much attention in the classroom.

During this workshop, students will utilize a series of prompts or activities as a starting point for writing fiction, essay and poetry. The primary goal of this class is to create a supportive community for writers and provide structured guidance in the process of exploring one’s unique literary voice and creating art.
Students will write in class and respond to each other’s work in a positive and constructive manner.  They will also read and analyze passages from novels, short stories and poems as models for their writing. During the second half of class, writers will share manuscripts and receive guidance and critique from the teacher and class participants.
Writing instructor Sonia Arora has been teaching literature and humanities for almost twenty years. Her work as a teaching artist takes her into classrooms across Long Island, New York City and Philadelphia where she explores oral history, digital media, poetry, activism, and filmmaking with youth in elementary, middle and high schools. She has published short fiction, poetry and essays.
Writers on the Sound Junior Sessions includes seven classes that run on Tuesdays, Oct. 3 to Nov. 14, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
The cost of the workshop is $150.
