A new juried competition and exhibition moves into the Art Guild of Port Washington facility this weekend.
“Face and Figure,” an exhibit all about portraiture in different mediums, begins Saturday and continues through Oct. 1 with 58 works by 44 local Long Island artists focused on the human form.
“The face and figure are challenging subjects for an artist,” Susan Herbst, the associate executive director, said. “This exhibit will engage the viewers’ appreciation for portraiture and the human figure and celebrates the human form in many styles and mediums. We are a very friendly organization that encourages people to visit our gallery or participate in our shows and classes.”
The competition will be judged by Diana DeSantis of Queens, a portrait painter who has studied with David Leffel and Harvey Dinnerstein. A master pastelist, DeSantis has shown her work at the Nassau County Museum of Art, Heckscher Museum and National Arts Club in Manhattan as well as Pastel Society exhibits in France, Italy and Russia, Herbst said.
DeSantis’ work has been published in American Artist, Artist Magazine and The Pastel Journal.
The Art Guild of Port Washington is located at Elderfields Preserve at 200 Port Washington Blvd. in Manhasset.

Herbst said a call for artists has been issued for the next exhibit, “Palate to Palette, the Art of Food and Dining.” The deadline for the October juried competition and exhibition is Sept. 15.
“From sumptuous still lifes or a single shiny apple, from casual picnics and farmers markets to elaborate Thanksgiving dinners, food helps define tradition and culture, trigger memories and make new ones,” Herbst said.
