Flowers and nature the focus of new art exhibits

The Island Now

November will bring three new exhibitions to the b. j. spoke gallery in Huntington, two solo exhibits and a gallery members’ exhibit, that will be on display and open to the public from Tuesday, Oct. 30 to Wednesday, Nov. 28.

Artist J. Lefsky, whose exhibit is called “
Floral Abstractions,” says the following about her work: I was born and raised in New York City, and painting has always been a very important part of my life.  After making the move from Brooklyn 18 years ago to Long Island, I have found the difference in my environment inspiring.  My paintings, I believe, are powerful expressions of the beauty of my surroundings — closeup and boldly colorful.  I try to fill them with the tremendous joy I feel being able to witness this splendor in the gardens and fields of Long Island.”

About “
Delighting in Nature,” the second solo exhibit, photographer Steven Finch said, “Although a musician and conductor by profession, I have another passion — photographing nature.  I have always been fascinated by the relationship between the two art forms: rhythm, color, mood, contrast and meaning.  Being in nature, seeing its movement, its ever-changing light and moods inspires me in much the same way as conducting a great work of music does. The challenge of both is to convey to the viewer or listener the love and delight I have found in both art forms.”

“The images in this exhibition were taken over the last twenty years,” Finch added. “They capture Rocky Mountain landscapes and flower close-ups; birds and scenes around a lake in Wisconsin’s north woods; and eastern seaboard locations from Massachusetts, to Long Island and the Georgia coast.”

The third gallery room reflects the remaining cooperative members’ art created in many styles and media. The artists in this exhibit include: Richard Anello, archival digital painter; John A. Bell, found metal constructions; Phyllis Baron, abstract painter; Katherine Criss, surreal painter/photographer; Lorraine Carol, abstract painter; Liz Ehrlichman, painter; Barbara Grey, watercolor painter and collagist; Chris Greene, realistic painter and cartoonist; Simon Hickey, wood sculptor and ink drawings; Karen Kirshner, abstract painter; Kevin Larkin, abstract painter; J. Lefsky, abstract painter; Lee Ann Lindgren, photographer; Lili Maglione, realistic and abstract paintings; Dianne Marxe, bronze sculptor; Nicolette Pach, fabric panels; Gia Schifano, realistic painter; Cindy Shechter, landscape painter; and Constance Wain, painter and printer.

The artists will convene at a reception on Saturday, Nov. 10, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the b. j. spoke gallery, 299 Main St. in Huntington.
