The Island Today: ‘The Midwife’ kicks off film series

The Summer Cinema Series, an annual highlight of Gold Coast Arts Center’s film program, kicks off on July 12 with a screening of “The Midwife,” starring Catherine Deneuve, at the Bow Tie Squire Cinemas (155 Middle Neck Road in Great Neck).

In keeping with the goals of the Gold Coast Cinema Series, a year-round program that culminates in the Gold Coast International Film Festival, the Summer Series features the best new independent films and studio releases.

Other films in the series, including Summer Shorts, will screen on July 26, Aug. 9, Aug. 23, and Sept. 13 (titles to be announced).

All screenings begin 7:30 p.m., with a Q&A to follow featuring filmmakers and other industry professionals.

The special guest for the July 12th screening is Delphine Selles-Alvarez, the film curator of the French Institute Alliance Française.

“The Summer Series is one of our more popular programs,” says Lauren Wagner, Director of Marketing & Development for the Gold Coast Arts Center.  “It gives audiences a sneak preview and a little taste of what they’ll experience at the Gold Coast International Film Festival in November.”

Last year’s sold-out series included five films, among them were “Life Animated,” an Academy Award nominee for Best Documentary Feature Film, and “Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You.”

Lear, arguably the most influential creator, writer, and producer in the history of television, participated in the event via Skype.

Tickets to individual screenings in the Summer Series cost $15.

Also available are series subscriptions, priced at $75 ($65 for seniors).

In addition to discounted tickets, subscribers receive priority seating, perks and discounts at local establishments.

Now entering its seventh year, the Gold Coast International Film Festival is a seven-day festival held in North Hempstead that showcases the work of exceptional filmmakers and provides the public with an insider’s view of the film industry.

Festival events are comprised of screenings, workshops, and conversations with prominent members of the film community, parties, and a gala.

Every year, the Festival attracts area residents, visitors, members of the business and film communities, public officials, students, and academics.

Past honorees and guests include Francis Ford Coppola, Baz Luhrmann, Hugh Grant, Isabella Rossellini, Ed Burns, and Phylicia Rashad, to name a few.

The Festival is part of a year-round screening and discussion series produced by the Gold Coast Arts Center, a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting the arts through education, exhibition, performance, and outreach.

Through this program, the Center previews more than 100 of the best new independent, foreign, art-house and repertory films, including many Oscar-winning and Oscar-nominated feature films in advance of award selections.

Each screening is followed by a Q&A with a filmmaker, film critic, or other media professional.
