LI Music Hall of Fame to recognize local high schools

The Island Now

The Long Island Music Hall of Fame is now accepting applications for its second annual High School Recognition Program.

“The program is designed to identify and award high schools on Long Island that are creating notable music education experiences for their students,” said Tom Needham, LIMHoF education chairman. “These schools are going above and beyond, by not only incorporating the national and New York State standards for the arts, but by truly creating meaningful and impactful experiences for students.”

High schools interested in being considered for the award must submit an application. Applications will be reviewed by a panel of music teachers, some of whom include past honorees of the LIMHoF “Educators of Note” award.  The application categories include program details, inclusion of national and state standards for music in curriculum, facility, staffing, as well as community and board support. The panel will consider the eligible high school programs with distinctions of “Gold,” “Silver,” “Bronze,” or “Emerging with Gold (with Distinction).”

High school music departments that win will be recognized at an event to be held in the spring of 2018. At this event, each honored school program will present a performing ensemble prior to the acceptance of its award. In 2017, Freeport High School, Great Neck North High School, Herricks High School, Long Island High School of the Arts, Northport High School and Uniondale High School were named as the award-winning schools.

Applications are due by Jan. 31, 2018, and can be viewed and downloaded here.

The Long Island Music Hall of Fame is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to recognizing the significant achievements of musicians who were either born or spent a significant part of their career on Long Island, including Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and Brooklyn. Beyond the recognition of famed composers, musicians and artists, LIMHoF has made significant inroads in support of music education on Long Island, including Educator of Note recognitions, scholarships for music students, and a new mobile music museum designed for school visits.
