ROA to hold woman’s forum on April 29

On April 29 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Reach Out America will present “We Persist,” a forum for, by and about women.

The agenda items will cover politics, health, peace and faith, subjects ROA had addressed since its inception in 2004.

The guest speakers will be well-known feminist activists Liz Abzug and Marie Wilson, New York Times staff writer Roni Rabin, single-payer advocate Dr. Margaret Flowers, Nobel Peace Prize nominee Cora Weiss, LIU Professor Shaireen Rasheed and UU Pastor Rev. Natalie Fenimore.

Kicking off the full day of discussion will be former state Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel.

Lunch and a short concert will be included in the day’s program. The event will take place at Veatch House on the Unitarian Universalist campus on 48 Shelter Rock Road in Manhasset.

Reach Out America, a progressive grassroots nonprofit, was formed 13 years ago with doable, meaningful, measurable change as its goals.

Through its five committees, Green, Electoral, Healthcare and Social Security, Peace, and Church/State, it has engaged activism that has run the gamut from petitioning and visiting legislators, taking muscular stands in the press, appearing at public meetings, demonstrations and targeted actions to, in the cases of several of its past and present members, running for elective office.

This year ROA has endeavored to expand its membership, its programming and its reach.

They have added an evening film series to their regular monthly daytime meetings (with speakers, the second Wednesday of the month) and this forum, the first the group has done since 2006.

Reach Out America has a website: www.reachout-america, a facebook page: ReachOut America and can be contacted via email:

The price for this event, including lunch, is $25 in advance by check made out to Reach Out America and mailed to 108 Station Road, Great Neck, New York, 11023; or $30 at the door ($5 off for students).
