Temple Judea hosts Nassau County Art Museum Director

The congregants of Temple Judea enjoyed a fascinating and exciting “virtual” event recently. It was arranged by Paul Vegoda, the chair of the Lifelong Learning committee at Temple Judea. Vegoda has been a volunteer at the Nassau County Museum of Art for many years.

The program was a lecture on the current exhibit by the vivacious and exuberant Director of the Museum, Charles Reilly.

The theme of the exhibit at the Museum is the great art of women artists. Works by Mary Cassatt, Georgia O’Keefe, Lee Krasner, Elaine deKooning, Helen Frankenheimer and Louise Nevelson, which are names of world- renowned artists, were all represented. Their works, as well as other women artists are exhibited right here in Roslyn at the Museum.

It was exciting to hear Reilly explain to the group the fascinating backgrounds of these artists and the difficulties they experienced simply because of their gender.

Some of the artwork looked at first like random brushstrokes until Reilly showed what the artists were expressing. Suddenly the paintings came to life. It was truly an educating, enlightening and fascinating experience for the group. Even those who had knowledge of Abstract Expressionism came away with a clear understanding of each painting.

Temple Judea is a Reform synagogue located at 333 Searingtown Road, Manhasset (exit 36n on LIE). For information, call (516) 621-8049 or www.temple-judea.com . New members are always welcome.
