The Art League launches a jazz series

The Island Now

With its first concert on Thursday, July 12, the Art League of Long Island will present a series of jazz performances to be held quarterly in conjunction with the Jazz Loft in Stony Brook in the multi-level Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery.

Both the Art League and the Jazz Loft are not-for-profit organizations whose missions share the goal of educating and presenting to the community; in the case of the former, it’s the visual arts, and the latter, the American musical innovation we call jazz.

The series begins with “It’s Gershwin Man,” featuring Steve Salerno on guitar, Tom Manuel on trumpet and friends on the 12th.

The Mark Devine Trio will play the music of the “Piano Kings” in the second performance in the series on October 18.

The third show on Feb. 21 of next year features an evening of Brazilian jazz, “Getz, Gilberto and the Bossa Nova,” with Vanessa Trouble, Steve Salerno and John Marshall.

On May 9, 2019, the Richie Iacona Trio, with Mike Hall, Tom Manuel and Madeline Kole on vocals, will perform the Great American Songbook.

This new series is sponsored by Olivia and Harlan Fischer, who have sponsored a monthly concert series at the Jazz Loft since the venue opened in May of 2016.

Fischer said, “We hope people will come out on a Thursday evening to make this series worthwhile.  If it works out, we can do this for years to come. Also, the combination of wonderful music in a great location at a great price is hard to beat.”

Tom Manuel, the founder and director of the Jazz Loft says, “This is just one more way to keep jazz alive and well on Long Island.  The location and the setting are both awesome.”

All of the performances will begin at 7 p.m.  The ticket prices are $20.  Tickets for Art League of Long Island members and seniors are $15.

Tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting the Art League at 631-462-5400 or going to www.artleagueli.org. For more information about the Jazz Loft, visit www.thejazzloft.org.

Those who attend the first concert this month can also enjoy the art exhibit currently on display in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery, “It’s All About the… LIGHT!”

The Art League of Long Island is located at 107 East Deer Park Road in Dix Hills, just off exit 42N on the Northern State Parkway and exit 51N on the LIE.
