Live performances of two children’s classics over the holiday weekend

The Island Now

The magical, award-winning classic stories, “Caps for Sale” and “The Three Billy Goats Gruff,” will come to life on stage with the award-winning Hudson Vagabond Puppets.

In the first story, a hat salesman falls asleep and wakes up to find his hats are missing. In the second story, three billy goats try to avoid an ogre as they cross a bridge.

In January 2018, Plaza Theatricals, Long Island’s largest touring theatre company, acquired the Hudson Vagabond Puppets.

Founded by Lois Bohovesky in 1980, the theatre troupe is well-known across the country for its larger-than-life puppetry performances that both enrich school curriculum and engage family audiences.

Influenced by traditional Japanese Bunraku puppetry, professional dancers and actors blend into shadows of the stage while performing a variety of puppetry styles that range from masks to rod, hand and body puppets.

“I am grateful that HVP founder, Lois Bohovesky, selected the Plaza Organization to carry on her legacy,” shared Plaza Theatrical’s producer, Kevin Harrington. “Lois’ work is well-known across the United States. The life-size puppets are stunning as is the work of the puppeteers. These shows are a wonderful way to introduce young people to live theatre. I am delighted that the Hudson Vagabond Puppets are part of the Plaza family.”

The company’s nationally renowned productions have been staged at prestigious venues including Avery Fischer Hall in Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and the Orange County Performing Arts Center in California.

Narrated ballets, a specialty of the company, have accompanied performances with the St. Louis Symphony, Little Orchestra Society at Avery Fischer Hall and the United States Military Concert Band at Eisenhower Hall at West Point.

“Caps for Sale” and “The Three Billy Goats Gruff” will be featured as part of Plaza Theatrical’s Family Theatre Series at The Showplace at Bellmore Movies, 222 Pettit Ave. in Bellmore for two performances only on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m., and Sunday, Nov. 25 at 12 p.m.

The performance runs 50 minutes and includes a puppet demonstration. Reserved seating tickets, which are $12, may be purchased online at www.plazatheatrical.com or by calling the box office at 516-599-6870.
