Two funk bands team up at The Paramount

The Island Now

For more than two decades, the band Lettuce has brought a new vitality to classic funk, matching their smooth and soulful grooves with a hip-hop-inspired urgency and mastery of beat.

Now on their fourth studio album, Crush, drummer Adam Deitch, guitarists Adam Smirnoff and Eric Krasno, bassist Erick “Jesus” Coomes, keyboardist Neal Evans, saxophonist Ryan Zoidis, and trumpet player Eric Bloom deepen that sound by channeling the sonic freedom and infectious energy of their incendiary live show.

Music and escapism go hand-in-hand. A concert or an album can unlock another world if you let it. The Denver-based band, The Motet, respect and revere this time-honored phenomenon.

Comprised of Lyle Divinsky on vocals, Dave Watts on drums, Joey Porter on keyboards, Garrett Sayers on bass, Ryan Jalbert on guitar, Gabriel Mervine on trumpet, and Drew Sayers on saxophone, the group fuses fiery funk, simmering soul, and improvisational inventiveness, continually providing an escape for listeners over the course of seven full-length albums since 1998, including their latest release, Totem.

The band plays countless sold-out shows and festivals everywhere from Bonnaroo, Electric Forest, and Summer Camp, to All Good Music Festival and High Sierra Music Festival, as well as 16 consecutive years of themed Halloween concerts.

“When you’re listening to us, I want your mind to be taken away from wherever you are during the day and into some other place,” says Watts. “It’s all about that.”

Lettuce and The Motet will perform their “Beyond the Clouds Tour” at The Paramount on Thursday, March 22 at 9 p.m.

The Paramount is located at 370 New York Ave. in Huntington.
