Northwell has named Dr. Jonathan Berkowitz, formerly of Westchester Medical Center, as medical director of its Center for Emergency Medical Services.

The center is Northwell’s ambulance service based in Syosset.

Transporting more than 120,000 patients from New York City and Long Island every year, it is one of the largest hospital ambulance services in the country, according to Northwell.

The center also oversees a helicopter service called SkyHealth, which transports patients who are in critical condition between medical facilities throughout the Northeast.

At Westchester Medical Center, Berkowitz has directed the Health Transfer Center and Health Regional Emergency Services since 2013.

There, emergency services transport more than 2,500 Hudson Valley patients every year, according to Northwell.

Berkowitz led a project that lowered transfer response times and another that helped integrate a secure texting application throughout the hospital.

He is on the New York State Emergency Medical Advisory Committee and is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Berkowitz earned his medical degree at SUNY Downstate and began his career at California’s Long Beach Memorial Medical Center as an attending physician.

“Dr. Berkowitz is a recognized leader in emergency medical services and will be a tremendous asset to our CEMS staff and the patients we serve,” said Dr. John D’Angelo, executive director and senior vice president of the emergency medicine service line at Northwell Health. “With his exceptional clinical, research and innovation skills, Dr. Berkowitz will help us enhance operations while making a significant impact in the health of our communities and the region.”
