East Hills resident among 9 winners of Art League juried exhibition

The Art League of Long Island’s last juried art competition of 2018 challenged artists from the Long Island region to submit original artwork addressing the subject of light in their artwork. 

Open to creative interpretation, 165 artists submitted 465 images of their artwork for the opportunity to exhibit in the gallery. 

Exhibition juror Karen Levitov selected works by 59 of those artists to be displayed in the gallery. Of those 59 works, nine were singled out for awards. 

 The following artists earned the distinction of Awards of Excellence and Honorable Mentions:

 Awards of Excellence:  Shain Bard of Huntington,  “Light Spilling Down the Street”, oil painting; Sheri Berman of Dix Hills, “Day’s End”, paper collage; Alan Richards of East Hills, “River Walk, photographic image composite. 

 Honorable Mentions:  Chris Ann Ambery of Hauppauge, “Emergence”, solarplate etching, intaglio & relief methods of inking; William Grabowski of Huntington Station,  “Castaways”, photography; Gerry Hirschstein of Old Bethpage, “Modern Snack Bar’, pastel; Denis Ponsot of Queens Village, “Pont Notre-Dame”, transparent watercolor; Neva Setlow of East Quogue, “Intersections”, plexiglass and light; David Stein of Mt. Sinai, “Lakefront Trail, Chicago, IL”, oil painting.

 The exhibit is on view through Aug. 5, with a public artists’ reception July 15 at 1 p.m.  The public is invited to attend the juror talk by Karen Levitov in the gallery on Tuesday, July 17 at 7:00 p.m. 

Karen Levitov is director and curator of the Paul W. Zuccaire Gallery at Stony Brook University and has organized numerous professional solo and group exhibitions of contemporary art in her current role and in her prior role as curator and senior administrator at The Jewish Museum.

 The Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery is open free of charge Monday through Thursday 9 am – 9 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and weekends from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.
