On Monday, Sept. 21, the East Williston’s Board of Education honored three Wheatley seniors, Anya Chabria, Layla Jarrahy and Victor Li for their recent achievements in two national competitions.
Anya Chabria and Layla Jarrahy were named Semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program while Victor Li was recognized as a Finalist in the 18th Annual USA Biolympiad National Finals.
As semifinalists in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program, both Anya and Layla scored in the top 1 percent of more than 1.5 million juniors in more than 21,000 high schools who entered the program by taking the PSAT last year.
These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.
As a finalist in the 18th Annual USA Biolympiad National Finals, Victor was among 20 finalists nationwide who competed virtually, this year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, out of 10,000 students who registered to compete. This high-level science competition consisted of ten days of biology instruction followed by two days of testing.
Congratulations to these three Wheatley seniors who exemplify dedication to learning and leading among their peers.
