Four adult-care hospitals on the North Shore of Long Island were ranked among the top 10 in the New York State by US News & World Report.
The rankings, released on Wednesday, are largely determined by objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators, and is based on evaluations of over 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties.
Northwell Health’s North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset was the highest-ranked hospital on Long Island, reaching No. 4 in the state. It received top 50 rankings in the categories of pulmonology and lung surgery for adults and children, urology, orthopedics, nephrology, geriatrics, gastroenterology, diabetes and endocrinology, and cardiology and heart surgery.
NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola was the next highest, ranked No. 5 in the state. It was followed by Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park at No. 6, which was nationally recognized in the gynecology; urology; ear, nose and throat; neurology and neurosurgery; and orthopedics disciplines.
St. Francis Hospital in Flower Hill was ranked No. 8, the only Catholic Health Services of Long Island institution on the list’s top 10. Dr. Alan D. Guerci, system president and CEO said the recognition came at “a challenging time for health care.”
“The physicians, nurses and other members of our patient care teams exemplify excellence and a deep commitment to those we serve,” Guerci said. “This recognition comes at the most challenging time for health care and is a tribute to the extraordinary caliber of professionals who provide health services at [the system].”
Including Manhattan’s Lenox Hill Hospital, ranked ninth, and Huntington Hospital, ranked 12th, four Northwell hospitals made the top 15 in the state.
Michael J. Dowling, president and chief executive officer of Northwell Health, said the COVID-19 pandemic caused the system to become “even stronger.”
“These rankings reflect all of the hard work being accomplished by the clinical staff and the support teams that make Northwell hospitals so highly regarded both regionally and nationally – and a destination of choice for consumers,” Dowling said. “We’ve just been through a seismic event that’s tested our health system’s staff, processes, resources and resiliency and I’m proud to say that it’s made us even stronger. We’re more mindful than ever of what’s important. Our mission has never been more vital or more aligned with the needs of the communities that we serve.”
On a different list from U.S. News, Northwell’s Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park, ranked as the No. 1 children’s hospital in the state of New York. It earned top 40 national rankings for exceptional pediatric care for cancer, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, neonatology, nephrology, neurology, orthopedics, pulmonology, and urology.
