Judge orders Adam Skelos to receive mental health evaluation

A federal judge ordered that Adam Skelos, son of former Republican state Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, receive a mental health evaluation and treatment as a condition of his bail on Monday.

The order was issued by U.S. District Court Judge Kimba Wood, who did not give a reasoning for the bail modification, according to Newsday.

A retrial of the Skeloses in a political corruption case is scheduled to begin on June 18, according to Newsday.

In September, a federal appeals court overturned the 2015 corruption convictions of Dean and Adam Skelos, citing a U.S. Supreme Court case involving former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell that narrowed the parameters of what constitutes corruption.

Adam Skelos and his father were convicted of bribery, extortion and conspiracy.

The Rockville Centre men were accused of using Dean Skelos’ former political power to secure more than $300,000 in payments for Adam from Glenwood Management, a New Hyde Park real estate development company, Physicians’ Reciprocal Insurers in Roslyn and Arizona-based environmental technology firm AbTech Industries.

Efforts to reach Adam Skelos’ attorney, John Joseph Kenney, were unavailing.
