A New Hyde Park man was arrested on Sunday for allegedly hitting and killing a pedestrian trying to cross the street in Williston Park Saturday night, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

Officials said 29-year-old David Bernardi was driving eastbound on Hillside Avenue near Broad Street in Williston Park on Saturday around 8:25 p.m. Bernardi, who resides at 46 Yorkshire Road in New Hyde Park, allegedly hit a 74-year-old woman crossing Hillside Avenue with his 2012 Nissan Rogue, according to a news release.

The woman, whose name was not disclosed, suffered multiple trauma injuries, according to officials. She was pronounced dead at the scene by a Nassau County police medic. Police said Bernardi remained at the scene after the incident.

Bernardi was charged with second-degree manslaughter and driving while ability impaired by drugs, officials said. He was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Sunday, according to officials. Bernardi did not respond to a request for comment.

Efforts to reach officials from the Police Department for further information were unavailing.
