Target to open in Port Washington

Target announced on Thursday it plans to open a flexible-format store in the Soundview Marketplace shopping center in Port Washington in October.

A 48,000 square-foot store will be built at 3 Shore Road, replacing a King Kullen that closed in 2015.

“This is a major plus for the village,” Port Washington North Mayor Bob Weitzner said. “It’s a plus to bring back the grandeur of the Soundview Marketplace.”

The Soundview Marketplace is privately owned.

“We look forward to serving even more guests on Long Island with the addition of Target’s Port Washington store at the Soundview Marketplace,” said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, properties, Target. “We think the community will enjoy the convenient shopping experience with Target’s broad and compelling product assortment.”

Residents have witnessed a steady deterioration of the shopping center in the last six to eight years, Weitzner said.

“At one point, this was a premier shopping center with wonderful stores for the community,” Weitzner said.

After King Kullen closed, Weitzner said, the village was under pressure to do something with the space, and residents were approaching village officials, asking what the plan was.

“Target’s flexible-format stores are designed to “allow for stores in smaller locations with assortments that are tailored to meet the needs of local guests,” a press release from Target said.

Flexible-format stores are a priority for Target and guests have responded well to having these customized stores available in urban and densely populated suburban areas, as well as college campuses,” the release said.

Target currently operates 32 flexible-format stores and will be opening 30 more in the next three years.

Weitzner said when he originally spoke with the property’s real estate agent, he was told that it would be hard to the fill the entire space and that it would most likely need to be subdivided.

“This is huge,” Weitzner said. “This is just really big to occupy the size of the building. It’s great The hard part was getting them here,” Weitzner said. “That’s done. And now we’re just waiting for the grand opening in October.”

The Target will offer the store’s normal services, including men’s, women’s and kid’s apparel; a grocery section, including fresh produce; a home and stationery assortment; an expanded cosmetic, skin and hair section; a portable electronics and tech section; and services for Target Mobile and order pickup, the village said.

“It has been a pleasure working with the Target team as we’ve assisted them in their decision to add a new location to the Soundview Marketplace shopping center,” Weitzner said. “We believe this is a major plus for the entire Port Washington community and look forward to opening day in the fall.”
