A car hit and killed an 80-year-old woman trying to cross the street Monday morning in North New Hyde Park, police said.

The woman, Palma Pullo of Floral Park, was crossing Hillside Avenue at 10:20 a.m. in front of the Stop & Shop supermarket at 653 Hillside Ave. when a westbound white 2015 Honda Pilot hit her, Nassau County police said.

The driver, a 40-year-old woman, stopped and aided Pullo before she was taken to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, police said. She was pronounced dead there at 11:12 a.m.

Pullo was crossing from the north side of the street, where the supermarket sits, about half a block west of the nearest crosswalk at Hillside Boulevard.

A man at the scene of the accident said he saw shopping carts in the street, indicating Pullo may have been pushing them when she was struck.

Police checked the car’s brakes at the scene, a Nassau County Highway Patrol officer said there. The investigation is ongoing.

The driver left the scene in her car at 12:38 p.m.
